Update wins Queen's Award
for Enterprise
Scientific Update, a private company owned and directed by Dr Trevor Laird, who edits the ACS journal, Organic Process Research and Development was given the Queen's Award for Enterprise 2002 (International Trade Category). Scientific Update operates from the picturesque country village of Mayfield, East Sussex, England. This prestigious accolade is bestowed by the Queen on only a small number of UK companies which have achieved outstanding results.
With
only 8 employees (some part time) the company achieved and
sustained growth, delivering conferences,
training courses and consultancy services worldwide on an extensive range of scientific subjects.
The company was set up in 1989 by Dr Laird to provide continuing education and training for graduate and post-graduate chemists working in the pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. Since that date, the company has gone from strength to strength, organising events and providing specialist consultancy for the worldwide chemical and pharmaceutical communities. As a result, it was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2002.
Scientific Update prides itself on its innovative approach. Many of the courses, conferences are new in the field and in 1997 Dr Laird became editor of the new scientific journal, Organic Process Research and Development, published jointly by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Chemical Society. Dr Laird is an acknowledged expert on process R & D and related topics, which he regards as very important areas of the industry.
Dr Laird stated he was particularly pleased since the Award has been earned against a sometimes difficult background of company mergers and diminishing budgets for technical training of scientists in industry. Scientific Update has a mission to convince companies of the importance of continuing education of scientific personnel, whose function is to produce the drugs which, at the end of the day, bring in their profits.
For a company well known for its friendly and professional service, this award is a testament to great teamwork combined with expert knowledge in this fast developing area of chemistry.
