| β-Alkylation of Alcohols |
Dr John Knight I noted with interest the paper by Allen and Crabtree (Green Chem, 2010, 12, 1362) wherein they describe the formation of a C-C bond between a secondary and a primary alcohol without transition metal catalysis.
| Carboamination |
Dr John Knight Whilst there are many methods for making C-N bonds such as displacement of a leaving group and reductive amination of course, the introduction of additional enantioselective methods are always of interest.
| Quantitative HPLC Analysis for Chemists – Open Access |
Dr John Knight During early phases of chemical development it can be difficult to get a good handle on the performance of reactions and processes in the absence of developed analytical methods.
| Ester and Amide Reduction with DEANB Complex |
Dr Will Watson Esters and amides can be reduced by N,N-diethylaniline:borane complex in the presence of SpiroCAT. Aliphatic esters are reduced at room temperature whilst aromatic esters require higher temperatures, 50°C, and longer reaction times.

| Have you read our Blogs? |
Moving into a new Chemistry Year - indeed new decade! - our resident experts, Drs John Knight and Will Watson have both submitted Blog articles: John reflects on the last year and what we might expect for this, in 'Chemistry Year Reflections' and Will poses the question 'What are the Top 10 Organic Reactions?'
We'd love your comments!

| ... and finally - you might be an engineer if...... |
| ... you sit backwards on the Disneyland rides to see how they do the special effects. |
