Octahedral molecular sieves (OMS) are inexpensive and easy to make from a mixture of KMnO4, MnSO4 and nitric acid in water. The potassium form of hollandite (Cryptomellane) is a microporous manganese oxide and the catalysts K-OMS-2 and H-K-OMS-2 are excellent in aerobic oxidation of alcohols. They can be easily removed from product and recycled.
