Reaction of the lithium enolate of, for example, an amide with an imine, does not lead to any Mannich type addition product, but carrying out a transmetallation to the zinc enolate allows addition to takes place with high diastereoselectivity (Vicario J C et al, J Org Chem, 2001, 66, 9030).
