The isomerisation of primary allylic alcohols to aldehydes has been achieved using an analogue of Crabtree’s iridium catalyst, normally used for hydrogenation, and by tuning the experimental conditions. (L Mantilli and C Mazet, Tet Lett, 2009, 50, 4141-40 The catalyst, (cod) Ir Pcy3, is changed from the usual PF6 anion to a BARF anion; the catalyst need s to be preactivated with hydrogen then the hydrogen removed from the reaction mixture bt freeze-thaw cycles before charging the substrate. Under these conditions almost quantitative yields are obtained with a variety of substrates in THF at room temperature using 5 mol % catalyst.
