New Regioselective Pyrrolidinone Synthesis

Chemists from Taiwan have developed a relatively simple method of reductive coupling of nitriles with acrylamides in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and zinc/zinc iodide, in water to give the 5-membered ring products shown below (Wong Y-C et al, J Am Chem Soc, 2009, 131, 18252).
