Ruthenium (III) chloride is an excellent reagent for deoxygenation of N-oxides and nitrones, and is compatible with the presence of cyano, halogen, ester and ether functionalities. In contrast to reagents with a PCl³, POCl³ and SOCl², no functionalisation of the ring takes place with ruthenium (III) chloride.
