Deoxygenation of Aromatic N-Oxides and Nitrones

Ruthenium (III) chloride is an excellent reagent for deoxygenation of N-oxides and nitrones, and is compatible with the presence of cyano, halogen, ester and ether functionalities. In contrast to reagents with a PCl_³, POCl_³ and SOCl_², no functionalisation of the ring takes place with ruthenium (III) chloride. (S Kumar et al, Tetrahedron Lett, 2005, 46, 8731-8739).
