Weinreb amides are extremely useful intermediates, but can be expensive on an industrial scale, because of the cost of O-methylhydroxylamine hydrochloride, which is required to generate the amide in the first place. Workers at Hoffman-La Roche in Switzerland used a morpholine amide in place of a Weinreb amide, which significantly reduced the cost of the conversion step.
