o-Iodoxybenzoic acid (IBX) is an effective oxidising agent whose use is limited by its potential explosivity. Chemists at Illinois* have reported a protocol for the oxidation of primary alcohols to carboxylic acids, and secondary alcohols to ketones, in which IBX is generated in situ by Oxone oxidation of 2-iodosobenzoic acid (IBA) or even 2-iodobenzoic acid (2IBAcid).
The simplicity and catalytic nature of the system, the recyclability of the catalyst, and the use of aqueous solvent systems are additional attractions.
