Intramolecular Enantioselective Stetter Reaction to generate Quaternary Stereocentres

The Stetter reaction, the addition of aldehydes to unsaturated esters and nitriles is an excellent atom efficient bond forming reaction. Using new carbene type catalysts, generated from triazolium salts in situ, an enantioselective version of the reaction has been discovered which gives good ee with quaternary centres (Kerr M S, J Am Chem Soc, 2004, 126, 8876).
