If your compound to be resolved has an aromatic group, you are much more likely to get resolution with benzyl or toloyl tartaric acids rather than tartaric acid itself. It is suggested that pi-stacking on the crystal structure may lead to this preference.
The stoichiometry of amine and tartaric acid derivative can be important. Some resolutions are successful with 1:1 and 1:0.75 ratios but not with 1:0.5 ratio.
